American Staffordshire Terrier Dog Breed

Developed in the 1800s for dog fighting. Later bred to be a family companion. Not recognized by AKC until the 1970s.

History  

Muscular build. Short coat in colors like brown, black, white or blue. Embodies strength and athleticism. 

Appearance

Confident, smart, good-natured and loyal. Devoted and protective of family. Requires socialization.

Temperament

Very active breed needing at least 60 minutes of vigorous exercise daily plus mental stimulation. Enjoys training.

Exercise

Weekly brushing of the short coat. Occasional bathing when dirty. Check ears and trim nails regularly.  

Grooming

Respond well to firm, consistent, positive training. Need early socialization. Can excel in many canine sports.

Training Tips

Prone to hip dysplasia, cardiac issues, allergies and skin problems. Lifespan 10-12 years.
